Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, the 3rd Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki.
In a condolence message issued on behalf of the Government and people of Ebonyi State, the Governor described the late Bishop as a “spiritual colossus” whose life was marked by humility, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to God and humanity.
Governor Nwifuru noted that the death of Bishop Chukwu represents the end of an era of profound spiritual guidance, moral clarity, and fatherly leadership in Ebonyi State and beyond. He added that the late Bishop was not only a revered shepherd of the faithful but also a true son of Ebonyi State from Ededeagu Umuezeokohu in Ezza North Local Government Area.
According to the Governor, Bishop Chukwu distinguished himself as an icon of faith, a promoter of peace, and a tireless advocate of justice, unity, and love. Through his pastoral mission, he touched countless lives, strengthened families, and contributed immensely to the spiritual growth of the people.
“He was a voice of wisdom in times of uncertainty, and his counsel served as divine guidance to leaders and the faithful alike,” the Governor stated.
While mourning his passing, Governor Nwifuru drew comfort from the Holy Scriptures, referencing 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” He affirmed that the late Bishop lived a life worthy of this testimony, completing his earthly journey in faithful service to God.
The Governor extended his condolences to the Supreme Pontiff, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, the clergy, religious, and lay faithful, as well as the immediate and extended family of the deceased.
He further acknowledged Bishop Chukwu’s immense contributions to moral discipline, social harmony, and spiritual development in the state, describing his passing as a significant loss not only to the Church but also to Ebonyi State and Nigeria as a whole.
Governor Nwifuru prayed that Almighty God would grant the late Bishop eternal rest and give all who mourn him the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“Adieu, faithful servant of God. Rest in the bosom of the Lord,” the Governor concluded.
