Scholars sponsored under the Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru (FON) Scholarship Programme who recently commenced their doctoral studies at Leeds Beckett University, United Kingdom, have participated in a PhD Research Development Workshop designed to strengthen their research capacity and prepare them for successful academic careers.
The workshop focused on key areas including research methodology, critical thinking, academic writing, and strategies for building a successful future through doctoral education.
Participants were exposed to the broader value of a PhD programme beyond the attainment of a degree certificate, with facilitators emphasizing that doctoral education is fundamentally a journey of intellectual transformation.
According to the scholars, the workshop highlighted the importance of acquiring knowledge, skills, and international networks that will enable them to make meaningful contributions to academia, industry, and society at large.
During the session, participants learned that a PhD prepares scholars for opportunities beyond the completion of a thesis.
These include developing the capacity to produce peer-reviewed publications that enhance academic credibility and global visibility, building international networks with researchers and collaborators across different countries, and gaining valuable conference experience through presenting research findings and receiving professional feedback.
The workshop also provided insights into research funding opportunities, equipping scholars with the knowledge needed to identify grants, fellowships, and other financial resources that support research development and career advancement.
