Ebonyi State is taking deliberate steps to modernise its justice administration system through technology, with the aim of making judicial processes faster, more efficient and responsive to the needs of citizens.
The reform, being championed by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Ben Uruchi Odoh, is part of efforts to address longstanding challenges associated with slow access to records, cumbersome documentation processes and dependence on physical files.
With the leadership and support of the Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, the Ministry of Justice has embraced technology as an important tool for improving the administration of justice in the state.
As part of the initiative, speech-to-text machines have been acquired and donated to the Judiciary and Abakaliki Correctional Centre through the intervention of the Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC).
The Ministry has also digitised its library and established an electronic archive room to improve the storage, retrieval and management of legal information and records.
The reforms are expected to reduce the time spent searching through voluminous physical files and improve the efficiency of communication and documentation within the justice system.
The focus, however, goes beyond the acquisition of technology. The initiative is designed to save valuable time, provide quicker access to information and ultimately ensure that citizens receive a more responsive justice system.
According to the philosophy behind the reform, technology is not intended to replace the human judgment that remains central to justice administration, but to provide judicial officers and other professionals with better tools to perform their responsibilities more effectively.
The development represents another step in the implementation of the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs, with technology being deployed to make governance and public services more efficient.
The initiative underscores the growing emphasis on a justice system that is not only fair, but also accessible, efficient and responsive to the people.
