Political leaders, statesmen and stakeholders in Ebonyi State have unanimously endorsed Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for a second term in office and adopted a rotational arrangement for the governorship among the state’s three senatorial zones.
The resolutions were reached at a non-partisan political summit held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Ecumenical Centre, Abakaliki, where stakeholders stressed the need to preserve the existing zoning arrangement to ensure equitable power distribution, political stability and peaceful transitions in the state.
The summit, chaired by former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Samuel Ominyi Egwu, featured contributions from prominent political leaders, including former Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Planning Committee, Barr. Eric Kelechi Igwe; Senator Emmanuel Onwe; Senator David Nweze Umahi, CON; Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; and Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi.
An extensive panel discussion involving Senator Anthony Agbo, Senator Julius Ali Ucha, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor and Senator Chris Nwankwo examined the political evolution of Ebonyi State and the importance of sustaining an equitable governorship rotation arrangement.
The stakeholders subsequently passed a vote of confidence in Governor Nwifuru, endorsing his re-election bid to enable Ebonyi North Senatorial District to complete its eight-year tenure from 2023 to 2031.
Presenting the communique on behalf of the stakeholders, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), Barr. Chioma Nweze, said the summit resolved to formally adopt and uphold the rotation of the governorship among Ebonyi North, Ebonyi Central and Ebonyi South senatorial districts.
According to the resolutions, Ebonyi North is to complete its tenure in 2031, after which the governorship will rotate to Ebonyi Central for the next eight-year period, beginning in 2031, before moving to Ebonyi South in 2039.
The stakeholders warned against any attempt by an individual or political group to undermine the zoning arrangement, describing it as an important framework for promoting fairness, inclusiveness and orderly political succession in the state.
Governor Nwifuru, who was represented at the summit by his Deputy, Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila, GCEHF, commended the stakeholders for organising what he described as a timely and visionary engagement.
He urged the people of Ebonyi State to respect and uphold the resolutions reached at the summit, noting that adherence to the agreements would contribute significantly to political stability and a peaceful transition of power.
The governor also expressed appreciation to leaders and representatives of other political parties for participating in the summit, stressing that political differences should not undermine the unity of the state.
He reaffirmed that Ebonyi State remains one indivisible family, irrespective of political affiliation, and called for continued cooperation among its leaders and citizens in the interest of sustainable development and peaceful coexistence.
