The General Hospital, Ezzamgbo, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has achieved a significant milestone in healthcare delivery with the successful performance of its first Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), a modern minimally invasive surgical procedure used in the treatment of enlarged prostate.
The landmark surgery was carried out by a team of urologists under the supervision of the hospital’s resident doctor, Dr. Ifeanyichukwu Edeaja, with the support of other medical personnel at the facility.
Speaking on behalf of the hospital, Dr. Edeaja disclosed that the patient, Mr. Nwabueze Moses, had battled severe symptomatic prostate enlargement for several years and had relied on a suprapubic urinary catheter after conservative treatment options proved unsuccessful.
He explained that unlike conventional open prostate surgery, the TURP procedure was performed without any external incision.
According to him, surgeons inserted a telescope through the urethra, enabling the removal of enlarged prostate tissue under direct visual guidance while significantly reducing blood loss and associated surgical risks.

Dr. Edeaja noted that the procedure offers considerable advantages over traditional surgery, including a lower risk of infection, fewer postoperative complications, and faster recovery time.
He added that patients who undergo the procedure can typically be discharged within three days, compared to the approximately two-week hospital stay often required after conventional surgery.
The hospital attributed the achievement to the Ebonyi State Government’s sustained investment in the health sector, particularly its commitment to strengthening healthcare institutions through partnerships with specialist consultants and medical experts from within and outside the state.
Hospital management expressed optimism that continued government support and collaboration with tertiary healthcare institutions would facilitate the introduction of more specialised surgical procedures across the state, further improving access to advanced healthcare services for residents.
The successful operation marks a new chapter in the advancement of medical care in Ebonyi State and underscores the growing capacity of public health institutions to deliver specialised and technologically driven healthcare services.
