An Ebonyi State scholar, Mr. Nwangbo Kenneth, has officially commenced his doctoral studies at De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester, United Kingdom, marking another significant milestone in his academic and professional development.
Kenneth was formally inducted into the university’s Doctoral College, an event that signaled the beginning of his PhD programme and a new phase in his pursuit of advanced research and knowledge creation.
As part of the induction activities, he participated in orientation sessions at the DMU Campus Building and toured several of Leicester’s historic landmarks, including Leicester Castle, the historic Courthouse, the underground prison cells beneath the Castle Courthouse, the DMU Museum, Trinity Herb Garden, and other heritage sites.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Kenneth described the moment as both fulfilling and inspiring, noting that studying abroad had once seemed an unattainable dream due to challenges encountered during his undergraduate years.
According to him, the turning point came through the scholarship programme established by the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, which enabled him to pursue a Master of Science degree in Software Engineering at the University of Greater Manchester, Bolton, in 2025.
“Just a few years ago, pursuing postgraduate education abroad was only a dream. Today, through the same scholarship initiative, I have progressed from a Master’s programme to doctoral research. This achievement reflects not only personal growth but also the transformative impact of investing in education and human capital development,” Kenneth stated.
He expressed profound appreciation to Governor Nwifuru for sustaining a scholarship scheme that has provided life-changing educational opportunities for many Ebonyi youths.
Kenneth noted that the governor’s commitment to education has enabled beneficiaries to acquire advanced knowledge and skills capable of driving development and innovation within the state and beyond.
He also commended the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Scholarship Board, Mr. Chakao Nweze, and the Board’s Secretary, Mr. Steven Ikporo, for their dedication and support in ensuring the success of scholarship recipients.
Special appreciation was extended to Vigica Consult Limited and the Government Liaison Officer, Mr. Gideon Okorie, whose guidance and support, he said, made his transition and stay in the United Kingdom seamless since his arrival a year ago.
Speaking on his doctoral research focus, Kenneth revealed that his study seeks to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence ethics policies and real-world software engineering practice.
“My research aims to develop a governance framework for responsible AI-enabled healthcare systems. Through this programme, I hope to contribute meaningful solutions that improve lives while advancing responsible and ethical technology development,” he explained.
He emphasized that doctoral research goes beyond obtaining another academic qualification, describing it as a commitment to innovation, critical thinking, collaboration, and the generation of knowledge capable of addressing real-world challenges.
Kenneth encouraged young people to remain committed to their educational aspirations, stressing that opportunities, combined with dedication, perseverance, and faith, can transform dreams into reality.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to God, his family, loved ones, mentors, and everyone who has contributed to his academic journey thus far.
The commencement of Kenneth’s PhD programme represents another success story from Ebonyi State’s overseas scholarship initiative, which continues to empower young professionals through access to world-class education and research opportunities.
