Thousands of beneficiaries of the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Scheme have thrown their weight behind the second-term aspiration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, citing the administration’s significant achievements in expanding access to affordable healthcare across the state.
The endorsement, which took place during a gathering of beneficiaries of the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency (EBSHIA), reflected widespread appreciation for what many described as a transformative healthcare programme that has improved the lives of countless residents.
According to available records, the state’s health insurance scheme has witnessed remarkable growth over the past four years.
Enrollment figures rose from 32,149 beneficiaries in 2022 to 137,133 in 2026, representing a 429 percent increase in coverage.
The programme has also delivered substantial healthcare services to residents, recording more than 478,000 healthcare interventions and nearly 400,000 hospital visits across the state.
Statistics indicate that over 113,000 malaria cases have been treated, more than 94,000 antenatal services have been provided, while thousands of surgeries and specialist medical procedures have been successfully carried out.
For many beneficiaries, the scheme has bridged the gap between healthcare needs and financial constraints, providing access to medical services without the burden of out-of-pocket expenses.
Observers noted that the endorsement was driven by the direct impact of the programme on the lives of ordinary citizens, including pregnant women, children, farmers, elderly residents, and vulnerable families who have benefited from free and accessible healthcare services.
The achievements of the agency under the leadership of its Executive Secretary, Dr. Divine Okemefuna Igwe, have been widely acknowledged as a key factor in strengthening healthcare delivery and advancing the healthcare component of Governor Nwifuru’s administration.
Beneficiaries who spoke during the event described the programme as a lifeline that has enabled thousands of residents to receive quality medical care, safe childbirth services,
treatment for common illnesses, and preventive healthcare without financial hardship.
The endorsement is being viewed by many political observers as a reflection of public confidence in the administration’s commitment to people-centred governance through the implementation of the People’s Charter of Needs agenda.
As the state continues to expand healthcare access, beneficiaries maintain that the successes recorded in the sector have strengthened their confidence in Governor Nwifuru’s leadership and vision for Ebonyi State.
