The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has donated relief materials worth millions of naira to victims of recent flood disasters in Akaeze and Ishiagu communities in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The relief materials, which were handed over to the state government on Wednesday, included bags of beans, rice and garri, cartons of vegetable oil, foam mattresses, mosquito nets and women’s clothing.
Receiving the NEMA management team at Government House, Abakaliki, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru expressed concern over the recurring cases of flooding in parts of the state, describing the situation as devastating.
Governor Nwifuru commended NEMA for its prompt intervention and support to the affected communities, noting that many victims had lost their means of livelihood as a result of the disaster.
“I am grateful to NEMA for this show of concern, and this support is something we will never take for granted,” the governor said.
Nwifuru expressed optimism that the Federal and Ebonyi State governments would soon find a lasting solution to the recurring flooding in the state.
“As a member of the Economic Council, I am aware that we have been making valuable recommendations and resources have been mapped out to address the menace. I’m sure with the commitment of Mr President, the issues will be addressed,” he said.
The governor assured NEMA that the state government would ensure transparency in the distribution of the relief materials, stressing that the items would be delivered to genuine victims of the flood disaster.
Earlier, the Director of Relief and Rehabilitation at NEMA, Mr. Imam Gariki, said the agency’s Enugu Operations Office had conducted an assessment of the affected areas to determine the extent of the damage and the level of Federal Government assistance required.
Gariki appealed to the Ebonyi State Government to ensure the prompt distribution of the relief materials directly to the flood victims.
