The Ebonyi State Government has strengthened healthcare service delivery by providing brand-new Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to medical doctors serving in general hospitals across the state, a move aimed at improving emergency response and ensuring prompt access to medical care.
The initiative, approved by Governor Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, complements the administration’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system following the recent recruitment of additional medical personnel.
According to the Governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa, the provision of official vehicles is designed to enhance doctors’ mobility, enabling them to respond swiftly to emergencies, move efficiently between healthcare facilities, and attend to urgent medical calls without transportation constraints.
He noted that before the intervention, some doctors depended on ambulances or their personal vehicles to carry out official duties, a situation that often placed unnecessary pressure on hospital emergency services and limited the availability of ambulances for patient transportation.
“With dedicated official vehicles, doctors can now respond immediately when called upon without worrying about transportation. This also ensures that hospital ambulances remain available for their primary purpose of transporting patients and providing emergency medical services,” the statement said.
The government explained that the initiative reflects a broader strategy to strengthen healthcare delivery by addressing both human resource and logistical challenges within the sector.
Beyond recruiting qualified medical professionals, the administration believes that providing the necessary tools and support systems will enable healthcare workers to perform their duties more effectively and improve service delivery across the state’s general hospitals.
The statement emphasized that the intervention will ultimately benefit residents by reducing delays in medical response, particularly during emergencies where timely access to healthcare professionals can make a significant difference.
It added that Governor Nwifuru’s healthcare reforms go beyond increasing the number of doctors in hospitals, focusing instead on creating an enabling environment that allows medical professionals to discharge their responsibilities efficiently.
The government described the initiative as another demonstration of the Governor’s commitment to building a responsive, accessible, and people-centered healthcare system that prioritizes the wellbeing of Ebonyi residents.
