The Ebonyi State Government says it has created 943 employment opportunities in the health sector as part of Governor Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare system and expanding access to quality medical services.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa, the recruitment and integration of healthcare professionals into the Ebonyi State Civil Service is one of the administration’s most significant investments in the health sector since Governor Nwifuru assumed office.
The statement explained that the initiative began with the recruitment of 195 healthcare personnel, comprising 39 medical doctors, 39 nurses, 39 laboratory scientists, 39 pharmacists, and 39 health attendants. The newly employed workers were deployed to general hospitals across the state to improve healthcare delivery and address manpower shortages.
It added that as the administration identified additional workforce needs, the programme was expanded, bringing the total number of jobs created in the sector to 943, according to figures from the Ebonyi State Ministry of Health.
As part of the initiative, the state government also absorbed staff of the Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT), an organization that has provided healthcare services in Ebonyi State’s rural communities for more than a decade, particularly in maternal and child healthcare, emergency obstetric care, and other essential medical services.
The government further integrated skilled birth attendants, ad hoc health workers, and other qualified healthcare professionals into the state civil service, ensuring that experienced personnel remained within the public healthcare system.
The statement noted that the recruitment exercise has significantly strengthened the state’s healthcare workforce by increasing the number of doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, and support staff available to provide medical services to residents.
Beyond improving healthcare delivery, the government said the initiative has also created economic opportunities for hundreds of families across the state.
“Each of these 943 jobs represents improved livelihoods, greater financial security for families, and increased economic activity within local communities,” the statement said.
According to the government, the employment programme is expected to generate a multiplier effect by boosting household incomes, supporting local businesses, and stimulating economic growth as beneficiaries spend their earnings within their communities.
The statement also emphasized that the integration of qualified healthcare professionals into the civil service promotes social inclusion while strengthening public institutions and enhancing the state’s capacity to deliver quality healthcare.
Governor Nwifuru’s administration described the initiative as a deliberate investment in human capital, stressing that sustainable healthcare depends not only on infrastructure and equipment but also on a motivated and adequately staffed workforce.
It maintained that the 943 employments reflect the administration’s commitment to building a stronger, more resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the needs of the people of Ebonyi State.
