Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has directed contractors handling the ongoing Trans-Saharan Highway project to strictly comply with approved engineering standards and specifications to ensure the delivery of quality infrastructure.
The governor gave the directive on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the 118-kilometre section of the highway, which stretches from Ndibe Bridge in Afikpo through Abaomege in Onicha Local Government Area, Onueke, Ezza South, Ukwuachi, Ezza North, Ishieke and Mbeke in Ebonyi Local Government Area, extending to its terminal point in Gboko, Benue State.
Speaking at the proposed flyover site in Ukwuachi, Governor Nwifuru said the project was designed to decongest traffic and ensure seamless movement of commuters and other road users.
He expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the project, describing it as a landmark initiative that is reshaping the infrastructure landscape of the South-East.
“I am very excited about the activities of Mr. President, especially in the area of infrastructure. He understands that the primary responsibility of government is to provide basic amenities, and that is exactly what he is doing for Ebonyi State and the South-East. The people of Ebonyi State are sincerely grateful. The President has not only demonstrated capacity but has also shown genuine love for our people,” the governor said.
Governor Nwifuru assured the contractors of the state government’s full cooperation, particularly in resolving issues relating to project evaluation and implementation, to ensure timely completion of the highway.
“When it comes to evaluation, our people are very cooperative. We will provide every necessary support to ensure the successful execution of this project,” he added.
The governor further warned the contractor, Infouest Construction Company Limited, to maintain professionalism throughout the project, insisting on strict adherence to engineering specifications. He cautioned against poor workmanship, substandard material mixtures, fund diversion and any other practices capable of compromising the quality of the project.
He also used the occasion to renew his call on the people of the South-East to unite and support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office.
Earlier, the Federal Controller of Works in Ebonyi State, Engr. Maxwell Okoha, explained that the flyover component of the highway was incorporated into the design to reduce traffic congestion, improve road safety and facilitate smoother transportation for commuters and motorists. He assured that the project would be executed in line with approved engineering standards.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Infouest Construction Company Limited, Mr. Mustapha Mohammad, assured the governor that the company remained committed to delivering the project according to specifications and within the stipulated timeframe.
The Trans-Saharan Highway is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Ebonyi and Benue states, boost economic activities and improve transportation across the region.
