Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called for continued unity, peace and collective determination as the state marks the 30th anniversary of its creation alongside Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
Nwifuru stated this during a Holy Mass held to commemorate the twin anniversaries, where he joined the people of the state and former elected governors, including former Governors Sam Egwu, Martin Elechi and David Umahi, to celebrate Ebonyi’s journey and achievements over the past three decades.
The Governor said the anniversary provided an opportunity to celebrate the people’s journey, honour those who laid the foundation of the state and reflect on the progress recorded over the years.
He recalled the decision of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, to create Ebonyi State, describing it as a historic development that gave the people a platform to determine their political and developmental destiny.
Nwifuru also paid tribute to the founding fathers and early administrators of the state, including the late Ezeogo Dr. Akanu Ibiam, as well as former military administrators, Navy Commander Walter Aye Feghabo and Simeon Oduoye, for their contributions to the early development of Ebonyi.
The Governor equally acknowledged the contributions of his predecessors in democratic governance, Senator Sam Egwu, Chief Martin Elechi and Senator David Umahi, now Minister of Works, noting that each administration had left an indelible mark on the development of the state.
According to him, Ebonyi has been blessed with leaders who, in different ways, contributed to the foundation upon which the present administration is building.
He described the people of Ebonyi as united, peaceful and hardworking, stressing that the state’s peaceful disposition had created an enabling environment for accelerated development.
Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the implementation of the People’s Charter of Needs, particularly in healthcare, education, agriculture, civil and public service, infrastructure and other critical sectors.
The Governor also announced the commencement of work on the new Abakaliki Cement Factory, describing the project as another significant step towards expanding the state’s industrial base, creating opportunities for the people and strengthening the economy.
Nwifuru expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the President’s fatherly support for his administration and the development aspirations of Ebonyi State.
“As we celebrate 30 years of Ebonyi State and 66 years of Nigeria’s independence, our message is clear: we honour our past, consolidate our present and build with confidence for the future,” he said.
The Governor wished the people of Ebonyi State and Nigerians continued peace and prosperity, praying for the progress of the state and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
