Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has announced that his administration has forwarded a bill to the Ebonyi State House of Assembly seeking to make kidnapping a capital offence in the state.
The Governor made this known during the funeral ceremony of the late Traditional Ruler of Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Eze Francis Igwe, whose remains were laid to rest on Friday, October 30, 2026, amid an outpouring of tributes from family members, political leaders, traditional rulers and other dignitaries.
Governor Nwifuru described the late monarch as a distinguished community leader whose life was defined by vision, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of humanity.
He recalled Eze Igwe’s remarkable contributions to public service, noting that his leadership journey began with his election as Councillor representing Ndufu-Alike before he went on to represent Ikwo North in the then Anambra State House of Assembly for two consecutive terms.

According to the Governor, the late monarch distinguished himself through uncommon leadership, integrity and dedication to grassroots governance, earning the confidence and respect of his people.
Nwifuru expressed deep sorrow over the gruesome murder of the traditional ruler, describing the incident as barbaric and a serious affront to the traditional institution.
He said the tragic death of the monarch underscored the urgent need for collective action against criminality across Ebonyi State and the country.
“His gruesome murder remains a tragic reminder of the cruelty of evil and the urgent need for all of us to remain united in our collective resolve to defeat criminality in every part of our dear state and nation,” the Governor stated.
He further described the late Eze Igwe’s death as a painful loss, considering his contributions as a traditional ruler, accomplished administrator, educationist and elder statesman.

“That such a respected monarch, accomplished administrator, educationist and elder statesman would meet such a cruel and heartbreaking end is a tragedy that continues to hurt our hearts.
“While no words can adequately heal the wounds left by this irreparable loss, we take solace in the inspiring legacy of honour, service, humility and patriotism which he bequeathed to his family, his community and Ebonyi State,” Nwifuru said.
The Governor’s announcement of the proposed legislation signals another step by his administration towards strengthening the state’s response to kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The late Eze Francis Igwe was the father of the immediate past Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Eric Kelechi Igwe.
The funeral provided an opportunity for the people of Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, the wider Ebonyi community and other well-wishers to celebrate the life and contributions of a traditional ruler whose public service spanned several decades.
