For farmers in rural communities across Ebonyi State, access to fertilizer has traditionally involved a long supply chain — from production facilities outside the state, through distributors and dealers, before eventually reaching the farm.
That process is gradually changing with the revival of the Ebonyi State Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited, which is now producing NPK fertilizer formulations for the agricultural market.

The development is significant for Ebonyi, an agriculture-driven state, as it brings an important component of the agricultural value chain closer to farmers.
The revived company currently produces four principal NPK formulations: 20-10-10, 27-13-13, 12-12-17 and 15-15-15. NPK refers to nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium — the three major nutrients supplied by the formulations.

According to information on the company’s production process, raw materials including urea, diammonium phosphate (DAP), muriate of potash (MOP) and limestone are used in the formulation and blending process. The finished products subsequently undergo quality-control procedures before packaging and distribution.
The revival means Ebonyi is not only consuming fertilizer produced elsewhere but is also participating directly in the blending and production of an important agricultural input.
Available industry data confirms that the Ebonyi State Fertilizer and Chemical Company is part of Nigeria’s wider fertilizer-processing industry. An Africa Fertilizer/IFPRI- and CGIAR-linked industry assessment lists the Ebonyi facility among fertilizer-processing plants in the country, with a recorded blending capacity of 40 metric tonnes per hour.

The development also places Ebonyi within a broader Nigerian fertilizer industry that includes both large-scale producers and blending companies.
For instance, Golden Fertilizer lists NPK 15-15-15, 27-13-13, 20-10-10 and 12-12-17+MgO among its products, alongside urea and special blends.

Similarly, Notore Chemical Industries, based in Onne, Rivers State, produces granular urea as well as several NPK formulations, including 20-10-10, 12-12-17 and 15-15-15. The company also states that some of its NPK products can be customised with micronutrients.
The revival of Ebonyi’s fertilizer facility therefore represents an effort to position the state within this wider agricultural-input value chain, with the potential to support local farmers, reduce dependence on fertilizer sourced from outside the state and contribute to the broader agricultural economy.

For Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration, the development is being presented as part of its broader focus on agriculture and practical support for farmers.
With Ebonyi’s economy deeply connected to agriculture, the renewed operation of the Fertilizer and Chemical Company provides another avenue through which agricultural inputs can be produced and made available closer to the farming population.
The development, according to the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Mr. Leo Ekene Oketa, reflects Governor Nwifuru’s understanding of the state’s agricultural character and his administration’s efforts to improve productivity and strengthen Ebonyi’s agro-economic value chain.
