The Ebonyi State Government has urged the newly inaugurated local government council chairmen and ward councillors across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state to consolidate the gains of the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda through responsive and people-oriented leadership at the grassroots.
The State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Chief Ikeuwa Omebeh, gave the charge in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, stressing the importance of responsible local government administration in driving development and delivering the dividends of democracy to the people.
Omebeh, quoting Proverbs 28:2, which states that “wise and knowledgeable leaders bring stability,” described local government as the closest tier of government to the people and a critical instrument for grassroots development, decentralisation, national integration and effective administration.
According to him, successive administrations in Ebonyi State have leveraged the synergy between the state government and the 13 local government councils to promote socioeconomic development and create opportunities capable of generating significant economic benefits for the people.
He noted that Ebonyians demonstrated patriotism and maturity during the August 2026 local government elections by exercising their civic responsibility peacefully and maintaining decorum throughout the electoral process.
The commissioner described the 2026 council election as one of the most peaceful elections conducted in the state, noting that its peaceful nature, despite the participation of opposition political parties, demonstrated the success of the peace initiatives of the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru.
He said the peaceful conduct of the election further reflected what he described as the unifying and inclusive governance philosophy of the Nwifuru administration, anchored on the People’s Charter of Needs Doctrine.
Omebeh congratulated the newly elected council chairmen and ward councillors, urging them to use their offices to serve the people with integrity, compassion, transparency, responsibility and commitment.
He particularly charged the new council leadership to uphold the peace initiatives of the state government and work toward consolidating the achievements of the People’s Charter of Needs Agenda in their respective local government areas.
The commissioner assured the new council chairmen of the continued support of the state government, stressing that the existing partnership and synergy between the state government and the local government councils would be sustained for the benefit of the people.
He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the dividends of democracy and creating human capital development opportunities for Ebonyians in recognition of their commitment to peace and support for the administration.
Omebeh called on the people of Ebonyi State to remain patriotic and committed to the collective development of the state, stressing that the progress of Ebonyi ultimately translates to the progress of its people.
“Ebonyi State is our collective identity and heritage. Hence, building the state equals building ourselves,” he said.
He urged citizens to continue to project the good image of the state wherever they find themselves.“Think Ebonyi! Think Home! Think Yourself! May Ebonyi State continue to win,” the commissioner added.
