The Ebonyi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalising higher education, as a series of reforms introduced by Governor Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru continue to restore stability and improve academic standards at Ebonyi State University (EBSU).
For years, the institution grappled with challenges including staff welfare concerns, industrial actions, academic disruptions, and uncertainties that affected both students and parents. However, the university is now witnessing a remarkable turnaround through deliberate interventions by the present administration.
Among the key measures implemented by the state government is the increase of the university’s monthly subvention from ₦150 million to ₦280 million, aimed at strengthening the institution’s financial capacity and ensuring smoother operations.
The administration has also approved a 20 percent salary increase for academic staff and a 10 percent salary increase for non-academic staff as part of efforts to enhance staff welfare, improve productivity, and promote a conducive learning environment.
In a bid to ease the financial burden on students and their families, Governor Nwifuru approved a 10 percent reduction in tuition fees while introducing a flexible instalment payment system to enable students meet their financial obligations without undue hardship.
The government further released ₦700 million to offset two months of outstanding subvention owed to the university, providing additional financial relief and supporting uninterrupted academic activities.
To address transportation challenges faced by students, the administration also provided free Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to improve mobility within and around the institution.
The interventions are expected to create a more stable academic calendar, improve teaching and research, and provide students with an environment conducive to learning.
Observers believe the reforms reflect the governor’s determination to reposition Ebonyi State University as a centre of academic excellence while reinforcing the state’s commitment to human capital development.
With improved funding, enhanced staff welfare, reduced financial pressure on students, and better institutional support, EBSU is steadily regaining its footing and strengthening its role in producing skilled graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to the development of Ebonyi State and Nigeria.
The administration maintains that investing in education remains one of the most sustainable pathways to economic growth and societal progress, expressing confidence that the ongoing reforms will continue to yield positive results for the university and future generations.
