The Nkaliki Hatchery in Ebonyi State has resumed poultry production, with layers and broilers currently being raised at the facility as part of efforts to revive agricultural production and strengthen the state’s food value chain.
The development marks a significant step in the ongoing revival of the Nkaliki Poultry Farm, which was previously a major source of poultry products, employment and commercial activity in Ebonyi State and beyond.
According to a statement by the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Mr. Leo Ekene Oketa, the poultry section of the facility is now operational, with the layers producing eggs that are already being purchased by members of the public, businesses and private buyers visiting the farm.
Oketa said the return of actual production at the facility demonstrates that the revival of Nkaliki Hatchery goes beyond the rehabilitation of old structures, as agricultural activities have now resumed on the farm.
“For a facility that once produced thousands of birds and eggs before its decline, seeing chickens and eggs back at Nkaliki is significant,” he said.
He noted that the revival represents more than the return of poultry production, describing it as the reopening of an agricultural value chain capable of contributing to food supply, employment and improved livelihoods.
The development is also in line with the agricultural objectives of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s People’s Charter of Needs, which places emphasis on practical farming, increased food production, job creation and the development of a more productive agricultural economy.
The reactivation of the Nkaliki Poultry Farm was specifically identified as part of the Governor’s agricultural agenda.
Oketa further disclosed that construction of a feed mill is also ongoing at the facility, with the objective of strengthening the poultry value chain and eventually making feeds available to poultry and livestock farmers within and outside Ebonyi State.
He acknowledged that the facility is still on the path towards full restoration but stressed that the return of production represents an important milestone in the revival process.
“Production has returned and Nkaliki is working again,” he said, encouraging Ebonyians and members of the public to visit the facility and patronise its poultry products.
He added that more activities are expected as the rehabilitation and expansion of the facility continue.
The revival of Nkaliki Hatchery is therefore expected to contribute to Ebonyi State’s broader efforts to boost agricultural production, strengthen local value chains and create economic opportunities through practical investment in agriculture.
