Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has commended women across the state for their resilience, dedication and support for his administration as the 2026 Ebonyi Women August Meeting came to an end in Abakaliki.
Governor Nwifuru made the commendation on Wednesday during the grand finale of the annual event held at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.
The governor, who was represented at the occasion by his Deputy, Princess Patricia Onyemaechi Obila, described the August Meeting as an important platform for promoting women’s empowerment and socio-economic development in the state.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the First Lady of Ebonyi State, Chief Mrs Uzoamaka Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, particularly through her Better Health for Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons (BERWO) initiative.
Nwifuru expressed appreciation to Ebonyi women for their support for the administration and urged them to remain committed to the state’s development agenda.
In her remarks, the First Lady thanked the governor for what she described as his gender-inclusive policies and the appointment of women to strategic positions within the administration.
She described Ebonyi women as important partners in the development of the state and pledged to continue supporting initiatives aimed at improving their welfare and livelihoods through her foundation.
Also speaking, former First Lady of Ebonyi State, Chief Mrs Eunice Ukamaka Egwu, said women from the state had continued to distinguish themselves through their contributions to society.
The Chairman of the occasion, Senator Engineer David Nweze Umahi, CON, who was represented by Deacon Austin Umahi, commended the organisation of the grand finale and encouraged the women to sustain their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Barr. Mrs Felicia Nwankpuma, on her part, urged mothers to remain vigilant and protect their children from human trafficking and other social vices.
One of the major highlights of the event was the distribution of cash empowerment to selected vulnerable women from the 13 local government areas of the state to support their small-scale businesses.
The event attracted female leaders, traditional and royal mothers, government officials and entertainers, including Nollywood actors Queen May Yul-Edochie, Chacha Eke-Faani and Destiny Etiko, as well as Prince Nwafor, Commissioner DJ Wysei and Comedian Sir One On One.
The 2026 Ebonyi Women August Meeting is an annual gathering that brings together women from across the state for discussions, empowerment activities and other programmes focused on women’s welfare and development.
