The Ebonyi State Government says its Foreign Scholarship Programme is yielding significant results, with more than 300 indigenes currently pursuing postgraduate studies in leading universities across the United Kingdom as part of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s commitment to building a highly skilled workforce for the state’s future.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Leo Ekene Oketa, made this known in a statement issued on Monday, describing the initiative as one of the administration’s most impactful investments in human capital development.
According to Oketa, while the government has received widespread commendation for its reforms in basic education—including the construction and renovation of schools, recruitment of qualified teachers, and policies aimed at restoring academic excellence—equally significant progress is being recorded in tertiary education through the foreign scholarship programme.
He disclosed that over 300 Ebonyi students are currently enrolled in Master’s and Doctoral degree programmes in prestigious UK universities, studying critical fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Engineering, Medicine, Health Sciences, Technology, Environmental Studies, and other globally relevant disciplines.
Oketa explained that the state government has taken full responsibility for the beneficiaries’ financial obligations, including tuition fees, accommodation, living expenses, and other essential educational costs, enabling the scholars to concentrate fully on their studies.
He noted that the programme is already delivering measurable results, revealing that several beneficiaries who recently completed their Master’s degrees have successfully progressed to PhD programmes, with many earning recognition for their research and academic excellence on the international stage.

According to him, the achievements of the scholars reflect both their dedication and the Governor’s vision of positioning Ebonyi State as a hub for innovation, research, and technological advancement.
“The Governor is not merely sponsoring education; he is deliberately raising a generation of innovators, researchers, medical professionals, engineers, scientists, and global thought leaders who will drive the future development of Ebonyi State and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s growth,” Oketa stated.
He described the Foreign Scholarship Programme as more than an educational intervention, calling it a long-term investment in human capital that will deliver lasting benefits to families, communities, industries, and the state at large.
Oketa added that the initiative demonstrates Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to sustainable development through education, expressing confidence that the knowledge and expertise acquired by the beneficiaries would strengthen Ebonyi’s economy and enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.
He maintained that the scholarship scheme remains one of the defining legacies of the Nwifuru administration’s education agenda, reflecting a governance philosophy centred on empowering people and preparing future generations for leadership and innovation.
