A member of the Ebonyi State Board of Internal Revenue (EBSIRS), Nwedu Abraham Nwedu, has commended the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for implementing sweeping reforms that are transforming the basic education sector and positioning Ebonyi State among Nigeria’s emerging leaders in educational excellence.
Nwedu said the People’s Charter of Needs administration has embarked on far-reaching interventions aimed at rebuilding the state’s education system from its foundation by improving infrastructure, expanding access to digital learning, standardising teaching resources and strengthening quality assurance across public schools.
According to him, one of the administration’s landmark achievements is the construction of 56 modern 12-classroom Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) storey buildings spread across the 13 local government areas of the state.
He explained that the new school buildings are being equipped with modern classroom furniture, including desks and chairs, learning materials such as textbooks, computers and other essential instructional facilities designed to create a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
“Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is rebuilding basic education from the foundation to the future. These investments are creating a learning environment where every child has access to quality education regardless of location,” Nwedu stated.
He noted that the administration is also prioritising digital education through the establishment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratories, with more than 5,000 computer systems being deployed to public schools to enhance digital literacy and prepare students for the demands of the modern world.
Nwedu further highlighted the Theresa Nkechi Okoye Laboratory Complex at Community Secondary School, Nwofe Agbaja, in Izzi Local Government Area, describing it as one of the state’s flagship education projects. He said the solar-powered two-storey facility provides advanced laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology and other science subjects, offering students access to world-class practical learning.
The EBSIRS board member also praised the government’s unified standard policy, under which approved textbooks and instructional materials are distributed free of charge to pupils and students in all public primary and secondary schools across Ebonyi State.
According to him, the initiative has eliminated disparities in learning resources, eased the financial burden on parents and ensured that no child is denied quality education due to a lack of instructional materials.
Nwedu also commended the intervention of the Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Foundation (BERWO Foundation), which he said has provided free sanitary pads and educational materials to about 10,000 girls between the ages of 14 and 18, helping to promote dignity, improve school attendance and reduce absenteeism among female students.
He added that the state government has strengthened school monitoring through daily supervision across all 13 local government areas to ensure teacher accountability, student participation, effective utilisation of instructional materials and maintenance of a conducive learning environment.
According to him, reports from monitoring exercises are reviewed promptly, while dedicated teachers are recognised and areas requiring improvement are addressed through supervision, retraining and continuous professional support.
Nwedu observed that the combined impact of these reforms is already being reflected in the state’s academic performance, noting that Ebonyi is steadily emerging as one of Nigeria’s top-performing states in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
He stressed that quality teaching begins with the availability of the right learning materials and that academic excellence becomes attainable when every child is given equal opportunities to succeed.
“The vision of Governor Nwifuru is to build an education system where every school day counts, every teacher teaches effectively and every pupil learns in a safe and supportive environment. These reforms are laying a solid foundation for the future of Ebonyi State,” Nwedu said.
He reaffirmed his appreciation for Governor Nwifuru’s commitment to educational development, describing the ongoing reforms as a strategic investment in the future of the state’s children and a significant step towards sustainable human capital development.
