Ebonyi State has recorded another major milestone in its drive to establish a world-class Virology, Research and Innovation Centre, following the arrival of a state-of-the-art Electron Microscope, the centre’s most critical scientific equipment.
The State Virologist, Dr. Euslar Nnenna Onu, confirmed the arrival of the advanced equipment, describing it as a significant development that will enhance biomedical research and position Ebonyi State as a leading hub for scientific innovation in the South-East.
The Electron Microscope is not merely a laboratory tool but a major scientific asset with wide-ranging applications in virology, mycology, bacteriology, immunology and parasitology. It can also support research in areas involving plants, minerals and materials, including the analysis of substances such as lead.
The development follows the arrival of the first and second batches of equipment for the centre in June 2026, bringing the facility closer to full functionality. The newly delivered Electron Microscope is reportedly the only one of its kind currently available in the entire South-East region of Nigeria.
When completed and fully operational, the Virology, Research and Innovation Centre is expected to transform disease detection, surveillance and response mechanisms in Ebonyi State. The centre will provide a platform for advanced research into emerging diseases, strengthen preparedness for public health threats, and support the training and development of skilled health professionals and researchers.
The facility will also reduce dependence on external laboratories for critical investigations and sample analysis, saving time and resources while positioning Ebonyi as a centre of excellence for scientific research and innovation.
The Virology, Research and Innovation Centre building, located at Oferekpe, is currently under construction and represents a strategic investment in health security, scientific independence and the future of healthcare delivery in the state.
With the ongoing construction and steady arrival of specialised equipment, the vision of creating a modern research institution in Ebonyi is gradually becoming a reality.
Observers have commended the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for investing in scientific infrastructure that may not only address present health challenges but also provide long-term benefits for future generations.
