Ebonyi State has achieved a historic milestone with the successful Passing-Out Parade of the pioneer 90 Regular Recruits Intake at the newly established Nigerian Army Training Depot (NATD) in Amasiri-Edda, marking the first Army training depot in the South-East geopolitical zone.
The landmark event coincided with an official working visit to the state by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, whose presence was accompanied by heightened security across Abakaliki, including the deployment of military personnel to strategic locations and increased aerial surveillance.
The new training facility makes Ebonyi the third state in Nigeria to host a Nigerian Army Training Depot, joining the existing depots in Zaria, Kaduna State, and Osogbo, Osun State. It is the first such military institution to be established in the South-East.
The development is widely regarded as a significant vote of confidence by the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army in Ebonyi State. It also reflects the collaborative relationship between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, and the leadership of the Nigerian Army.
The Nigerian Army Training Depot serves as the primary institution where civilian recruits undergo intensive military training, including physical conditioning, weapons handling, leadership development, discipline, and character building, preparing them for professional military service.
Beyond its military role, the establishment of the depot is expected to deliver substantial economic, social, and security benefits to Ebonyi State and the South-East region.
Economically, the facility is projected to boost commercial activities through increased patronage of local businesses such as hotels, transport operators, food vendors, artisans, and other service providers. It is also expected to create employment opportunities in administration, logistics, maintenance, construction, and other support services while attracting further federal investment in infrastructure.
Socially, the presence of the depot is expected to encourage the development of schools, healthcare facilities, and other public amenities, strengthen civil-military relations through community engagement initiatives, and promote national unity by bringing together recruits from different parts of the country.
From a security perspective, the training depot will enhance the Nigerian Army’s operational capacity in the South-East, improve response to security challenges, strengthen manpower development, and provide a strategic base for emergency response and support to civil authorities.
The Army training depot adds to a growing list of strategic federal institutions being established in Ebonyi State. The Nigerian Navy is also constructing a modern Naval School at Amachara Agbaja in Izzi Local Government Area, further underscoring the state’s increasing strategic importance in national security and development.
The successful graduation of the pioneer recruits marks the beginning of a new chapter in military training in the South-East and reinforces Ebonyi State’s growing role as a key partner in Nigeria’s security architecture.
